We have significantly improved our Land Rover by installing a split charge system. This upgrade enables us to power essential equipment, such as a laptop and a compressor, from a secondary battery while using the Clark Mast for photography projects.
To install the new battery and charging circuits, we removed the rear seats on the passenger side and built a custom box with a padded top. This box securely holds the secondary battery, the jack and recovery kit. For ease of use and safety, we installed two isolator switches and a voltage-sensitive relay module at the end of the box. This module efficiently splits the charging current between the main and secondary batteries, ensuring both are charged properly when the engine is running.
Each battery is protected by a 60A fuse, providing protection against any electrical faults.
Benefits of a Split Charge System
- Extended Power Supply: By installing a secondary battery, we can run power-hungry equipment like laptops and compressors without draining the main battery, ensuring the vehicle can always start.
- Increased Efficiency: The voltage-sensitive relay module automatically manages the charging process, distributing current between the batteries as needed. This eliminates the need for manual switching and ensures optimal charging efficiency.
- Enhanced Safety: With isolator switches and a 60A fuse for each battery, the system is well-protected against potential electrical issues, reducing the risk of damage to the batteries and connected equipment.
- Convenient Storage: The custom-built box not only houses the secondary battery but also provides storage for the jack and recovery kit. The padded top adds an extra layer of protection and functionality.
This split charge system upgrade ensures we have a reliable and efficient power source for our equipment for future photography projects.
